Online refresher courses

IHE Delft’s.online refresher courses are accessible to alumni all over the world but focus on particular regions, such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2022 and 2023, the courses focused on r topics related to post-pandemic actions in the water sector.

Online refresher courses comprise lectures, presentations by participants, group and panel discussions, networking events and a closing event. Participants build connections and network by sharing their professional experiences and challenges. Those who complete the course are awarded certificates of attendance.

The three 2022 and 2023 online refresher courses, funded by the Water and Development Partnership Programme phase 2, are organised as part of a project titled, Fostering Unity and Upgrading the Relations of IHE Delft Alumni Networks Globally (FUTURING).

The courses focus on post-pandemic actions in the water sector.

The Covid-19 pandemic slowed down global efforts to foster climate change resilience and to fulfil the Sustainable Development Goals. It is essential that the water sector recovers the momentum lost during the pandemic. The courses in particular focus on

(a) Provision of safe water and sanitation for public health, water and food security,

 (b) Extreme climate change effects on urban protection and food security, and

(c) Financial, governmental, institutional and policy-making enhancing mechanisms.

Each theme will be introduced with keynote speeches given by alumni and IHE Delft experts. Participants will then discuss case studies and challenges. The last day includes a panel discussion during which potential regional follow-up actions will be drafted.

For each course, 20-30 alumni who are from, live or work in the region live in, work in, or are from the continent the course targets will be selected as participants. Others interested can attend open sessions and debates.

Objectives of the courses

  • Facilitating exchanges of experiences among alumni from different countries facing similar issues and problems in their professional capacities;
  • Enhancing and strengthening relationships among alumni, and alumni’s relationship with IHE Delft;
  • Learning from participants’ experiences and professional practices to adapt and improve the approaches and contents of courses held at IHE Delft; and
  • Exploring opportunities for establishing and strengthening local and regional knowledge centres that are part of regional and global networks for capacity building in the water, environment and infrastructure sectors.
