Alumna interview with Iara Giacomini: We need more women in the water arena
As a child, she was inspired by oceanographer and filmmaker Jacques Cousteau. Today, IHE Delft alumna Iara Giacomini makes an impact for water in Brazil in her role as Director of River Basin Rehabilitation, Access to Water and Multiple Use of Water Resources in the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. In an interview at the World Water Week in Stockholm, she describes her motivation, the impact of IHE Delft on her career and why it is important for women to enter the water sector.

Miguel Laverde Barajas earns PhD for research on rainstorm analysis
Following PhD research at IHE Delft, Mr. Miguel Laverde Barajas of Colombia successfully defended his PhD thesis and was awarded with a Doctoral degree on 11 April 2022. Professor Dimitri Solomatine is his promotor and Dr. Gerald Corzo Perez his co-promotor. Dr. Laverde shared a few insights as he embarks on a new chapter of his life.

IHE Delft alumnus Marcos von Sperling won the IWA Global Water Award 2021
We have the honour to announce and congratulate Prof. Marcos von Sperling, IHE Delft alumnus and guest lecturer from Brazil who has won the acclaimed International Water Association Global Water Award, during a presentation at IWA’s Digital World Water Congress 26 May 2021. The award, held every two years, recognizes the outstanding achievements of IWA members and water sector professionals.

Gabriela Nicoleti De Freitas
Gabriela Nicoleti de Freitas is from Brazil and is studying for a Master’s in Sanitary Engineering. Gabriela’s father was a civil engineer who helped people who had problems with water supply and this inspired her to work and to study in the field of water. Gabriela was always interested in working at an international organization, such as the United Nations. At IHE Delft, both came together.

Tatiana dos Santos Silva, Alumni Award winner 2018
The Rectorate was pleased to present Ms. Tatiana dos Santos Silva from Brazil with the IHE Delft Alumni Award 2018. The award is given annually to an alumna/alumnus who has proven to be a role model for other water professionals, by demonstrating the impact of her/his work in a water related field, to improve people's quality of life. In 2018 for the first time the younger generation of alumni - those who have graduated in the last 10 years – has also been invited to participate.

Maria Wünsch De Alvarenga
Maria comes from Brazil. She studied Environmental and Sanitary Engineering at the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA) in the south of the state of Minas Gerais. After graduation, she worked for Biokratos, a consultancy agency in her hometown. Afterwards, she followed a trainee programme at AEGEA Saneamento, where she was responsible for the quality control of wastewater treatment plants. Maria has a Rotary International scholarship, obtained through the application to Juiz de Fora Rotary Club.
