Students at the Prinsenhof in Delft

Your time at IHE Delft will not only be about academics but also about embracing a unique cultural experience. Get ready to embark on an enriching journey filled with learning, exploration, and making lifelong connections.

Delft, Netherlands, Europe

IHE Delft is located in the historical centre of Delft, a city of great charm characterized by ancient canals, beautifully kept monuments and historic squares. It is also a young, vibrant city with a large student population and an ideal starting point to explore the Netherlands and Europe.

Delft is known for its historic town centre with canals, Delft Blue pottery, painter Johannes Vermeer and scientist Antony van Leeuwenhoek and its association with the royal House of Orange-Nassau. Since Delft is a university city, there are plenty of cultural events and an abundance of cafés and restaurants that cater to every taste and make time spent away from your studies enjoyable and relaxing.

Safe cycle paths throughout Delft and the Netherlands provide recreation, exercise and a free means of commuting to IHE Delft from your student accommodation – all of the housing we offer is close to the Institute.

Delft is well connected to the efficient Dutch public transport system, making The Hague, Rotterdam, Schiphol International Airport and Amsterdam easily accessible. It is a great location to start exploring other places of interest, both within the Netherlands and Europe.

Housing

Delft is a university city, and therefore accommodation is scarce and expensive. This is why IHE Delft provides fully furnished accommodation in Delft for all students of the Institute’s Delft-based programmes, available upon arrival and for the duration of the study period. Our accommodation is intended for our MSc students to live in by themselves throughout the course of their MSc programme: from the weekend before the start of week 1 up until a few days after you graduate.

You will either live in a self-contained studio apartment, or you will share your bathroom and kitchen with one or two other IHE Delft students of the same gender. You will always have your own bedroom with a desk and closet, so that you have a place for yourself where you can sleep, study, relax and keep your belongings. Monthly rent ranges from €500 to €900 and includes all expenses from repair services to internet and electricity.

Most of IHE Delft students are located at our student accommodation complex at the Mina Krusemanstraat in Delft

Settling in

Staff at the Institute simplify your transition to the Netherlands by organizing annual Introduction Days for MSc students, usually in November. In this time, staff is on hand to help you deal with residence permits, health insurance, bank accounts and other formalities. The introduction period is also packed with activities that offer opportunities for new students to meet each other and get to know Institute staff.

Practical information

  • Insurance

While you are living in the Netherlands, you are required by law to be properly insured. IHE Delft ensures that you can fullfil this requirement by arranging an insurance policy for all IHE Delft MSc students with AON student insurance.

During your MSc programme you’ll be insured with AON’s ICS Complete+(*) insurance package, which includes the following coverage:

    • Medical expenses and hospitalization, including for pre-existing conditions
    • Counselling and psychological care
    • Liability insurance
    • Repatriation
    • Home contents
    • Legal assistance

The AON ICS Complete+ insurance policy is meant specifically for international students. Your insurance also applies when you do field work or research outside of the Netherlands. For holidays abroad, travel insurance is included. It also meets the requirements for your immigration application.

(*) AON Complete+ is not available for Erasmus Mundus joint master degree and on-campus short course students.

  • Dutch bank account

Usually your bank account from your home country won’t suffice while studying abroad. You’ll need to open a Dutch bank account shortly after moving to Delft. A Dutch bank account is needed for example to pay your accommodation rent and to receive the monthly allowance from your scholarship.

You are free to choose with which bank you want to open your account, but IHE Delft recommends ING bank or Revolut. You’ll receive detailed advice on how to open a Dutch bank account during your first week at IHE Delft.

  • Cost of living

Apart from the tuition fee, you are expected to cover your own living expenses. The estimated amount needed for subsistence and accommodation is approximately €1100 per month.

Monthly rent of our student accommodation ranges from €500 to €900 and includes all expenses from repair services to internet and electricity.

The costs of the residence permit and insurance are at this moment:

    • Health insurance: €57 per month
    • Residence permit: €210 one-off fee

You can visit the Nuffic website for an estimation of daily student expenses while in the Netherlands.

A home away from home

Throughout your study period, IHE Delft organizes social, cultural and sports events, allowing you to get the most out of your free time. You are eligible to use TU Delft's sports facilities, including the gym, and to take part in numerous sports and cultural classes. Meet the Dutch

Meet the Dutch, an extracurricular, volunteer-led programme at IHE Delft, aims to introduce international students to Dutch culture and life, fostering a welcoming environment in the Netherlands. Running for over 40 years, it initially began when students lived with Dutch families before moving into student housing. The programme connects students with volunteers from diverse backgrounds, offering a chance to bond over coffee, walks or sightseeing.
