Madoche Jean Louis
Madoche Jean Louis is from Haiti and he is studying the Master Water Science and Engineering with a specialization in Hydraulic Engineering and River Basin Development. One year ago, he was searching on the Internet for a Master’s degree in Europe. It was a dream for Madoche to study in Europe. Madoche has a SIDS scholarship (Small Island Developing States), funded by the Netherlands Government).
Where did his passion for water come from?
In his childhood, he grew up in a rural area in Haiti, next to rivers. When he was a child he took many baths in the rivers. He developed a love for the sea and rivers, ‘’for me, rivers are beauty, joy, life’’ After the earthquake of January 12, 2010 in Haiti, he decided to study water to pursue a career where he is able to help rebuild his country. In addition, during his civil engineering bachelor degree in Mexico, he consolidated this love for hydraulic engineering by participating in courses, seminars and congresses in the field.
About water issues in Haiti
‘’Due to Haiti’s geographical position we are very vulnerable to floods. In 2004, 2008 and 2016 there were hurricanes in Haiti and many people died. So, hydro-climatological extremes events are quite frequent in Haiti. We still do not have good water resources management. We have a lot of government ministries, but there is no coordination between them. Water supply and sanitary engineering are also not well organized. There is a lot to do back home to instil a new approach in water resources management’’
After graduation
Madoche hopes to have a good job and be useful for Haiti. He is hoping to do a PhD after his studies. He would like to use his skills to help Haiti and also help other countries if needed, as he is a global citizen.
What do you think about IHE Delft and Delft?
The first week was quite difficult, because he had to be ten days in self quarantine. The climate is different, it is very cold and he has to wear many clothes, but he can adapt. He likes to interact with people, which for now is difficult because of the COVID-19 situation, but he feels can cope with this. His first impression is that The Netherlands is a very beautiful country, has impressive water management and beautiful canals. There is a good infrastructure for biking. He likes living in Delft as it is a student city.
I am impressed by the dynamism, the proactivity of the staff of the Institute. Discipline, order and love of work are emphasized among staff members. Finally, the quality of the education at the Institute is very competitive with a real and beautiful atmosphere of an international and multicultural environment
