About IHE Delft

IHE Delft Institute for Water Education is the largest international graduate water education facility in the world. Based in Delft, the Netherlands, IHE Delft confers fully accredited MSc degrees and PhD degrees in collaboration with Dutch partner universities. The Institute conducts research and supports capacity development to address the world's water challenges.
The Institute
Since the start in 1957, the Institute has provided water education and training to more than 25,000 professionals from over 190 countries, the vast majority from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Institute staff work with partners in cutting-edge research and capacity-development projects with a worldwide impact. IHE Delft aims to make a tangible contribution to achieving all Sustainable Development Goals in which water is key.
UNESCO, UN & water
IHE Delft operates as a foundation under Dutch law. As a Category 2 centre under the auspices of UNESCO, IHE Delft is a member of the UN-Water network. As such, the Institute is involved in high-level discussions on global water problems. At the same time, we work with partners to apply solutions locally.
IHE Delft contributes expertise to the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) and its research, education and capacity work contributes to the global water agenda.

Highlights 2023
2023 was a year full of events, research, new projects, and developments in capacity building and our educational offering. The Communication office, together with the input of our staff has compiled and condensed everything in the ‘Highlights’ booklet.
Organization
IHE Delft, a foundation under Dutch law, is overseen by a Governing Board. A three-member Rectorate leads the Institute, including its about 200 staff members, almost 60% of whom are academic staff. More than 350 national and international guest lecturers from government agencies, partner universities and research institutes support the Institute’s work.
History
What today is the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education begun in 1957 with a postgraduate diploma course in hydraulic engineering for 45 professionals from developing countries. Since then, IHE Delft has developed into one of the world’s largest graduate water education facilities.

Partners
IHE Delft has signed a number of long-term international cooperation agreements with various partners to support cooperation in human and institutional capacity building. Cooperation with these partners span a wide range of fields related to the development of capacity at individual and institutional levels.

Capacity development is the most sustainable way to solve the global water problems and is the goal of all our activities. IHE Delft students learn not only how to solve technical problems but also how to understand water issues from an interdisciplinary viewpoint.
